KAPIT: The new iron jetty at Rumah (Rh) Edison Bugap, Sungai Melekun, here could serve as a model for similar projects in rural Sarawak.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the jetty, which he is set to officiate this evening (July 5), is both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.
He said his political secretary, Ambrose Abong Bugek, visited the site and found the structure to be a major upgrade for the local community.
“Besides being sturdy, the completion of the iron jetty and concrete path, which residents have long waited for, has made daily routines easier, especially for those going to their farms or carrying out river activities to source food,” said Nanta in a Facebook post.
Despite road access via the Kapit-Balleh route, many villagers still depend on the river for transport, fishing and farming-related activities.
Nanta, who is the local Member of Parliament, added the new jetty replaces a decades-old wooden structure that had become worn out and unsafe due to prolonged exposure and use.
