SARIKEI: An elderly man was killed in a crash along Kilometre 431 of the Pan Borneo Highway after he allegedly switched lanes without signalling, causing a car to collide into the rear of his motorcycle.
The accident happened at around 2:00 pm yesterday (June 28) near the Betong-Sarikei-Meradong stretch.
The 77-year-old had been riding from Sarikei towards Sungai Rusa when a Perodua Myvi, driven by a 30-year-old woman heading from Kuching to Sibu, struck him from behind.
Paramedics confirmed his death at the scene at 2:20 pm and his body was later taken to Sarikei Hospital for a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the Myvi driver escaped unscathed.
Sarikei police chief Supt Aswandy Anis said preliminary investigations indicated that the victim’s sudden lane change into the right lane without signalling led to the fatal collision.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
He urged those who witnessed the accident to come forward and assist with the probe by contacting Sarikei district police headquarters or traffic investigating officer Insp. Ahmad Mustaqim at 084-652222 ext. 279.
Aswandy reminded motorists to remain cautious and alert, as well as observe traffic rules to avoid tragic incidents on the road.
