DEBAK: After a five-year break, the Saribas International MTB Jamboree made a strong return, drawing over 140 riders to its tougher and newly improved course.

The highly anticipated revival saw participants from Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam converge on Debak for the sixth edition of the event, which has been rebranded and upgraded from the former MTB XC Challenge.

Saribas assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam said the return of the jamboree not only reignited the spirit of mountain biking in the region but also gave a significant boost to local tourism and the rural economy.

“Participation this year has been very encouraging, not only from local riders but also from our neighbours in Indonesia and Brunei, as well as one rider from Africa,” Mohammad Razi told Sarawak Tribune recently.

He added that the last event was held five years before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Razi noted that the reintroduction of the jamboree came with several improvements, including a longer and more scenic route designed to test endurance and showcase the natural beauty of Saribas.

“This year’s edition served a different kind of challenge compared to previous editions as it involves routes through the villages.

“At the same time, it serves as a new attraction for eco-tourism,” he added.

Razi who is also Deputy Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, added that the event reflected the growing appeal of Betong as a cycling and eco-tourism destination, with homestays fully booked and hotels in nearby towns accommodating the overflow of visitors.

“The participants are staying in Betong, at nearby hotels, which means the organisation of this event has been very positive.

“This has had a very positive impact on our local social and economic development,” he said.

He added that the cycling event not only promotes Debak and Betong but also helps put Sarawak on the map for international cycling events.

Eight categories were contested in this year’s race, covering a thrilling 36.5-kilometre route that tested riders’ stamina, skill and grit across Betong’s challenging terrain.

The categories featured a wide field of contenders – Men’s Open (18 years and above), Women’s Open (13 years and above), Master A (40-49 years), Master B (50-59 years), Super Master (60 years and above), Super XL (BMI 33 and above), Betong Closed (18 years and above), and Junior (13-17 years) – reflecting the event’s inclusive and competitive spirit.

The prestigious jamboree was organised by the Betong Division Cycling Association (BCDA) in collaboration with the Saribas Constituency Service Centre and the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department (JBS), offering total cash prizes worth RM21,700 to celebrate the champions of endurance and adventure.
