SIBU: The second edition of the National Sibu Youth and Junior Boxing Championship 2026 will get underway on Monday (July 27), setting the stage for six days of exciting action featuring 198 promising young boxers.
The championship will see 165 male and 33 female boxers representing clubs from across Sarawak, as well as Sabah, Perak, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor.
The competition will also welcome international participants from neighbouring Singapore and Indonesia.
Championship chairman, Zurkarnain Majidi, described this year’s response as highly encouraging, with a strong turnout reflecting the growing popularity of grassroots boxing.
“We are very pleased with the overwhelming response for this year’s edition. What makes this championship even more exciting is the participation of clubs from all over Sarawak, Sabah, Perak, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, along with representatives from neighbouring countries,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Organised by the Sibu Division Boxing Association with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the tournament will run from July 27 to August 1 at the Malay Club Hall (MUC) in Kampung Nyabor, Sibu.
“As this is only the second edition, we expect the level of competition to be even more exciting. From what we understand, the boxers have been preparing well to represent their respective clubs,” Zurkarnain said.
He added that beyond providing a competitive platform, the championship also serves as an important avenue for identifying and nurturing young boxing talents capable of progressing to higher levels of competition.
“We believe this tournament will help uncover new talents with the potential to advance to the state, national and even international stage,” he said.
Zurkarnain also called on the public, particularly those in and around Sibu, to come to the venue and support the young athletes throughout the six-day championship.
