SERIAN: The Orang Ulu community here has grown into a more united and recognisable group over the years.
Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said the Orang Ulu were once little known in the constituency, but the establishment of the association about 15 years ago had made them a community to be acknowledged.
“When I was first elected 35 years ago, hardly anyone knew about the Orang Ulu in Serian.
“But today, through this association, you have shown that you are a community to be recognised,” he said at the Orang Ulu Serian Association fundraising dinner here last night (Oct 4).
Riot praised the association’s cultural performances, saying they were comparable to professional showcases.

He added that the association had played a key role in strengthening the community’s identity.
Despite being small in number, Riot said the Orang Ulu here had shown resilience and unity, assuring them of his continued support.
During the dinner, the association also presented the 2023–2024 Outstanding Student Incentives to 12 students whose parents are both, or either one, Orang Ulu.
The initiative aimed to encourage educational excellence and recognise the achievements of young people in the community.
