KUCHING: Rising floodwaters in Sebuyau have forced the opening of a temporary evacuation centre (PPS), with 25 villagers moved to safety today.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said PPS Bangunan Masjid Lama in Kampung Seruyuk was officially opened at 8 am.

At the time of writing, eight families, comprising 25 victims, have been evacuated.

SDMC stated that evacuation trend is on the rise, signalling a worsening flood situation in the area.

As of this morning, Sebuyau remains the only location with an active PPS statewide, with monitoring and response efforts ongoing.

Meanwhile, weather model analyses indicate that wind convergence is expected to affect Sarawak from Jan 29 to Jan 31, potentially triggering prolonged periods of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in parts of the state.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the weather pattern could lead to unstable conditions, with thunderstorms and heavy rain occurring over affected areas during the period.

Members of the public have been advised to stay informed by referring to MetMalaysia’s official website and social media platforms, and downloading the myCuaca app for the latest and verified weather information.
