SARIKEI: River conservation works in Meradong District are being intensified to improve water flow and reduce flood risks in several affected areas.
Federal Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, said the project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing drainage infrastructure to safeguard the well-being of local communities.
He said the conservation works involve clearing sediment, obstructions and debris that could disrupt the smooth flow of water in rivers and tributaries.
“With these conservation works, we hope to help mitigate flood issues while ensuring smoother river flow and preserving the rivers for the benefit of the community,” he added.
He said this in a statement after the project site handover, represented by Sarikei People’s Service Centre officer, Wong Soon Mee, together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage on Thursday (March 12).
Huang, who is also the Sarikei Member of Parliament, added that site inspections were also conducted to ensure the project would be carried out according to the approved plans and specifications.
The conservation works involve Sungai Binatang and Sungai Tulai in the Koperasi Tulai area, which are expected to bring long-term benefits to residents, particularly during the rainy season.
