River rehabilitation works to improve drainage in Meradong

One of the rivers in Meradong identified for rehabilitation works to improve drainage efficiency and reduce the risk of flooding and riverbank erosion in surrounding communities.

BINTANGOR: Several rivers and tributaries in the Meradong district will undergo rehabilitation works to improve drainage systems and reduce the risk of flooding and erosion in surrounding areas.

Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Repok assemblyman, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the project forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure rural drainage systems remain efficient and well maintained.

He noted that river conservation work is crucial to ensure smooth water flow while also reducing the risk of riverbank erosion that could threaten nearby communities and infrastructure.

“I remain committed to strengthening basic infrastructure in rural areas, particularly those related to water management and drainage systems in the Sarikei parliamentary constituency,” he said according to a press release.

Several locations in Meradong have been identified for the rehabilitation works, which will be implemented under the supervision of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarikei.

Among the areas involved are Sungai Binatang in Palaie, which includes one tributary, as well as Sungai Tulai at Koperasi Tulai and Jalan Tulai involving three tributaries.

Rehabilitation works will also be carried out at Sungai Binatang along Jalan Chai Hing involving one tributary, Sungai Padi along Jalan Sing Tung Kwong involving one tributary, and Sungai Bakong along Jalan Sing Hua involving one tributary.

The project site handover ceremony was witnessed by his representative, Wong Soon Mee.

Huang expressed hope that the works would improve the efficiency of the drainage system while reducing the risk of floods and erosion that could affect public facilities and residential areas.

“I hope all the planned projects can be implemented smoothly and completed on schedule so that the benefits can be enjoyed by the local community as soon as possible,” he said.
