KAPIT: Forty development projects worth RM1.233 billion are currently being carried out or set to begin soon in Kapit Division to strengthen infrastructure and uplift the socio-economic wellbeing of the local community.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said 19 of the projects have been completed, while another five with a combined value of RM116 million are under construction.

He added that 16 more projects, valued at RM721 million, are expected to be tendered this year.

“The project launched today is worth RM99.9 million and involves the construction of a 12.5km road, three steel bridges and other related infrastructure.

“It is scheduled for completion within 36 months, from May 5, 2025, to May 2028,” he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nanga Ibau and Ulu Sungai Ibau Road project yesterday (Jun 26).

The project will benefit 11 longhouses comprising 219 households and nearly 1,900 residents, while also providing improved access to a health clinic and two primary schools.

Uggah, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, urged contractors and the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and to comply with the approved schedule, specifications and budget.

He also highlighted the importance of using the PWD Project Dashboard to track progress, and called for strict action against contractors who fail to deliver.

Uggah said the state government is committed to upgrading former logging roads into rural alternative road networks, noting that approximately 1,273.7 kilometres of such roads in Kapit have potential for improvement.
