KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive growth, with about RM1.3 billion in contracts awarded to Bumiputera vendors between 2016 and 2024.

SEB Chairman, Datuk Ibrahim Baki, said this marked a excellent achievement in a matter of about eight years.

“Since the formation of the Bumiputera Participation Unit under the stewardship of Datuk Idris Buang, we have actually achieved excellent progress from 2016 to 2024 where the amount awarded to Bumiputera vendors was about RM1.3 billion,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak Energy Vendor Excellence Awards (SEVEA) 2025 held at Waterfront Hotel here on Friday night.

Ibrahim further said in line with Sarawak’s ambition to achieve high-income status by 2030, 53 per cent of 5,318 vendors engaged by SEB are Sarawakian, including many Bumiputera businesses.

“As we continue to grow our local content, we see the number of Bumiputera vendors that were awarded contracts increased significantly between 2023 and 2024.

“In 2023, RM493 million worth of contracts was awarded to 169 Bumiputera vendors.

“This increased in 2024 to RM628 million awarded to 291 Bumiputera vendors – an increase of RM135 million or 27.4 per cent,” he said.

Of the total contract value awarded last year, he said, 33 per cent was allocated to Sarawakian Bumiputera vendors, thus reflecting a significant commitment to inclusive local participation.

“At Sarawak Energy, we believe that when our partners thrive, we thrive.

“That is why we continue to drive initiatives that strengthen vendor capabilities through our Vendor Development Programme,” he said.

In addition, he said the company will also facilitate access to financing, with over RM112 million approved through its Vendor Financing Programme, and equip vendors for long-term success in partnership with Contractor and Consultant Registration Unit (UPKJ), Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), and global sustainability networks such as the United Nations (UN) Global Compact through the ESG Start initiative.

On the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) front, Ibrahim said SEB has made significant strides by achieving the lowest lost time injury frequency rate of 0.186 and 100 per cent environmental compliance at its regional offices and major stations since 2020.

“These results are only possible through a shared culture of safety and accountability –  one in which our contractors have played a crucial role,” he said.
