KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated RM1.7 million to the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) to enhance efforts in curbing drug abuse within the state.

Bukit Aman NCID Director Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin expressed gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the contribution of four Toyota Hilux vehicles and 19 units of Instant Visual Drug Detectors (IVDD).

“This significant allocation, totaling RM1.7 million, underscores the Sarawak government’s strong commitment to combating drug-related issues,” Khaw told a press conference after officiating the graduation parade of the Basic Police Training Programme (PLAK) for Constables Batch 73, Series 8/2024 at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) today (Dec 7).

Khaw identified Miri, Kuching, and Sibu as the primary drug hotspots in Sarawak.

However, he assured that the drug situation in the state remains under control, with no major drug labs or manufacturing facilities detected.

“Most drug-related cases in Sarawak involve the trafficking of drugs into the state and subsequent distribution to neighbouring countries,” he said.

Since assuming the role of NCID Director on March 4, Khaw has overseen the seizure of 50 tons of various drugs worth RM308 million in nationwide operations against drug syndicates.

To bolster its efforts, NCID plans to increase its personnel in Sarawak.

“Sarawak is a priority for us, and we will allocate additional officers to strengthen our capabilities in combating drug-related activities,” he added.
