SARATOK: Contractors have been appointed for four irrigation and drainage system improvement projects in Kalaka.
They are funded by the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) with a total cost of RM10.72 million.
Kalaka assemblyman, Mohamad Duri, said this is welcome news for residents of Kampung Kupang, Perpat, Paloh and the Sungai Tali Paun area across Saratok town.
According to him, these projects are crucial for preventing water stagnation and ensuring fertile land for agriculture.
“We are grateful that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Government, through BDDA, will begin site work soon, as the implementing contractors have already been appointed,” said Mohamad.
He made these remarks after attending an Iftar event organised by the Saratok District Office and Nanga Budu Sub-District Office yesterday.
The projects include upgrading water control gates and related infrastructure at Kampung Kupang, Perpat, and Paloh, and improving agricultural roads in the Sungai Tali Paun area.
Mohamad noted that BDDA’s funding helps overcome budget constraints faced by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and the Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA).
“Farmers can now breathe a sigh of relief as the embankment roads and water control gates will be fully restored.
“This is proof of the inclusive development brought by the Sarawak Government, with many projects successfully implemented in Kalaka through agencies like BDDA,” he added.
Meanwhile, the upgrading of the JPS Pagan Scheme and IADA Sungai Rembut Scheme will proceed, with JPS set to initiate the tender process within this year.
