THE Sarawak Government has earmarked RM107 million in 2026 for the preparation and upgrading of sports venues ahead of co-hosting the 2027 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that a total of 11 sports facilities has been designated as official venues for the 2027 SEA Games,

“This include Sarawak Stadium, Stadium Perpaduan, Lawn Bowl Centre, Sarawak Cricket Ground, Squash Centre, Shooting Range, Wushu Training Centre, Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, and Archery Range.

“The upgrading and expansion of sports complexes and facilities will be carried out as part of the state’s long-term strategy to strengthen readiness for future national and regional sporting events.

“In addition, RM54 million will be committed for the construction and enhancement of other sport complexes and facilities throughout the state,” he said when tabling the 2026 State Budget today.

Sarawak has intensified preparations for co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games by conducting a benchmarking visit earlier this November to observe the preparations for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand

The benchmarking visit was aimed at strengthening Sarawak’s readiness as one of the main host states and marked the state’s first experience in co-hosting the region’s largest sporting event.

Sarawak’s readiness is crucial as the 2027 SEA Games will involve Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Sarawak working together under one organising structure.

The cooperation between Sarawak, Johor, Penang and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) will be central to the Games’ success.
