THE state government will set aside RM129 million next year to support the development and modernisation of tourism-related infrastructure and facilities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the allocation will support projects such as the transformation of the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building into a Performing Arts Centre and the redevelopment of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) swimming pool into a Water Fun Park.

“It will also fund the Centre of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Sadong Jaya Mangrove Tourism, and various museum projects,” he said said when tabling the 2026 State Budget on Monday (Nov 24).

Abang Johari added that RM194 million will be allocated to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts for its operations and the execution of targeted tourism marketing and promotional programme.

“This includes hosting cultural events and festivals with an allocation of RM45 million, as well as grants to the Sarawak Tourism Board, Business Events Sarawak, Sarawak Art Council, and Sarawak Craft Council totaling RM106 million.

“It also covers sponsorship grants for cultural and heritage initiatives (RM10 million), research grants (RM5 million), and other tourism-related support (RM1 million),” he added.

Additionally, to strengthen eco-tourism, RM24 million will be allocated to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) next year for the implementation of strategic projects.

“These projects include Gunung Mulu National Park management, redevelopment of the Bako National Park Gateway, the Nature Discovery Centre at Piasau Nature Reserve, and the Sarawak Park Guides Training and Management System,” he said.

He added the government will intensify efforts to enhance Sarawak’s visibility by harnessing digital and social media marketing, partnering with travel agencies and airlines, and by participating in international trade fairs and exhibitions.

“The launching of our flagship airline AirBorneo serves as a catalyst not only for domestic connectivity but also to further promote Sarawak as “Gateway to Borneo” in ASEAN and global regions,” he added.
