KUCHING: Zecon Bhd’s Kota Petra Green Technology Park (KPGTP) is expected to attract RM12 billion in investment, and generate 10,000 jobs during its construction phase, said Group Managing Director, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Spanning 3,000 acres near Demak Laut Industrial Estate and Senari Port, the park will focus on high-growth sectors, including biotech, agritech, spacetech, smart manufacturing, AI data centres, and green technology.

The Sarawak government approved KPGTP in November 2024, and designated it a Special Economic Zone, waiving foreign ownership restrictions.

Ernst & Young is currently conducting economic impact studies and supporting Zecon’s tax and incentive applications with federal agencies.

Zecon signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).

Zecon will manage land and infrastructure, SDEC will handle digital and security systems, while CENTEXS leads skills and innovation initiatives.

To date, 20 MoUs and NDAs have been inked with prospective investors.

Land clearing for Phase 1 – covering 80 acres for solar and data centres – has been completed.

The park will feature a 300MWac agrivoltaics solar farm with battery storage (BESS), in line with Sarawak’s Post-COVID19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

A February MoU with Sarawak Incorporated Sdn Bhd will see up to 1,000 acres used for an integrated pineapple farming and solar-IoT model – the first of its kind in Sarawak.

“This model blends clean energy with commercial agriculture, boosting food security while anchoring green innovation,” Zainal said in Zecon’s 2024 annual report.

Separately, Zecon Medicare – a SEDA-registered solar investor – is developing a 2MWac rooftop solar PV system at UKM Children’s Specialist Hospital under a self-consumption scheme.

The 3,044-module system will generate 58.4 million kWh over 22 years and is 67 per cent complete as of February 2025.

In Sabah, Zecon and Petrosabah Sdn Bhd signed an MoU to develop 60MWac floating and 60MWac land-based solar farms with 20MWh battery storage in Lahad Datu, targeting regional energy security.

Additionally, Zecon is working with Majlis Ugama Islam Sabah to develop the Kingfisher Precinct near Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

The RM1.3 billion “build, lease, maintain and transfer” project will provide housing for over 6,700 students and staff, and create up to 600 jobs.
