KUCHING: A total of RM13 million has been allocated to Sarikei Hospital for the procurement of essential medical equipment since 2022, ensuring the facility remains competitive in providing quality healthcare.
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said the allocation, spanning from 2022 to 2026, covers the replacement and addition of high-tech assets to enhance patient safety and clinical outcomes.
“Among the equipment being replaced or added are General Anaesthesia machines, Mobile X-Rays, and Laparoscopic machines for keyhole surgeries.
“Additionally, the hospital will receive Phaco machines for cataract surgeries and Argon Laser machines,” she said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara on Tuesday (Feb 24).
Hanifah was responding to a query from Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead regarding the federal government’s plans to upgrade Sarikei Hospital’s facilities and address parking issues this year.
On the issue of parking, Hanifah noted that current assessments by the hospital management indicate that the existing parking facilities are sufficient for the time being.
However, she assured that the Ministry of Health (MOH) remains committed to monitoring the situation closely.
“The ministry will continue to study this matter comprehensively to ensure a proactive plan is in place should there be a need for parking improvements in the future.”
Beyond medical equipment, Hanifah said that Sarikei Hospital is slated for several critical infrastructure upgrades this year.
These include the replacement of the medical gas system, addressing mold and condensation issues, and upgrading the hemodialysis unit to improve patient comfort.
She reiterated that these continuous efforts reflect the MOH’s dedication to ensuring that healthcare facilities in Sarawak, particularly in the Sarikei region, are maintained at the highest standards to serve the people effectively.
