DEPUTY Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced that Sarawak has spent a cumulative RM16 billion on development projects through the state’s Alternative Funding initiative as of April 2025.
Uggah announced this during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
He revealed that RM8.12 billion has been allocated for the implementation of 1,571 projects in 2025 alone, with RM1.11 billion or 14 per cent of the total already spent.
Of the total 1,571 projects, 1,514 involve physical development while the remaining 57 are non-physical initiatives, with 974 projects or 61 per cent already completed and the rest at various stages of implementation.
Providing further breakdown of the total expenditure, Uggah said RM5.3 billion has been spent on the Coastal Road and Second Trunk Road projects.
The Sarawak Water Supply Grid for stressed areas received RM3 billion, while RM1.7 billion was channeled into the Rural Electricity Scheme to extend power supply to more rural communities.
An allocation of RM2.3 billion was dedicated to regional development projects under the Regional Corridor Development Authority, including initiatives under the Upper Rajang Development Agency, the Highland Development Agency, and the Northern Region Development Agency.
The Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency received RM888 million, while RM1.0 billion was allocated to the Kuching Urban Transportation System.
To enhance digital connectivity, RM730 million was used for the SMART tower and MySRBN rural broadband network managed by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation.
A further RM218 million went towards digital empowerment programmes and the construction of telecommunications towers.
For administrative development, RM271 million was spent on establishing State Administrative Centres in Bintulu, Limbang and Lawas.
In the education sector, RM158 million was used for the development of CENTEX campuses in Lundu, Dalat, Lawas, and Universiti Teknologi Sarawak in Mukah, while RM157 million was allocated for the Sarawak International Schools in Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu.
Other notable projects include RM111 million for the construction of the Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing Airport in Betong, RM73 million for the New Sarawak Civil Service Leadership Institute in Santubong, and RM108 million for the State Archive Building in Kuching.
