SARIKEI: A roofed basketball court will be built in Meranti here with an allocation of RM190,000 under the 2025 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), as part of ongoing efforts to improve sports infrastructure in rural Sarawak.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, said the project aims to support the growing interest in basketball among local youth and provide a platform to nurture young talent.
“I hope this facility will serve as a platform to identify and nurture new talent, while also fostering a spirit of sportsmanship among young people,” he said during a courtesy visit by Repok Sarikei Basketball Club’s Chairman, Hii Kah Hock recently.
Huang, who is also the Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok Assemblyman, has channelled RM1.74 million to sports-related projects in the constituency under the RTP between 2020 and 2025.
The breakdown of allocations includes RM500,000 in 2020, RM150,000 in 2021, RM200,000 each in 2022 and 2023, RM500,000 in 2024, and RM190,000 this year.
“This figure excludes additional funds disbursed under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) Programme,” he added.
