SERIAN: The construction of a new bridge across the Nyanuh River in Kampung Pulau Piranuk here will begin following Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA)’s announcement of a RM1-million allocation.
The bridge, which is 20 metres long and 5.5 metres wide, will also include the construction of a 200-metre paved road, complete with traffic signs and safety railings.
Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Martin Ben, who officiated at the earth-breaking ceremony today, said the project is expected to be completed within eight months.
“The project, expected to be completed by November 31, will greatly benefit the villagers in terms of improved connectivity and socio-economic development,” he said.
Martin, who is also the Kedup assemblyman, hoped with the presence of the bridge, residents in the area will be able to open up idle land for agricultural purposes and transform Pulau Piranuk into a new settlement area.
“The government provides the facilities, but it is the efforts of the residents that will determine the outcome,” he said.
He added his constituency has received a total allocation of RM150 million under the GKCDA, including the construction of a new road costing RM42 million, linking Kampung Pulau Piranuk and Kampung Mayang Kawan/Mayang Mawang to Mentung Merau, Mentung Mubok and Mentung Berawan.
