KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved an allocation of RM2.3 million for the reconstruction of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at Jalan Rock here.

Johari announced the allocation during a Fund Gala Dinner by Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching at Sarawak Club on Wednesday.

“I was informed by president of the association, Shankar Ram Asnani that it costs RM4.6 million to reconstruct the temple. I have discussed with Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on the matter and we have decided to allocate 50 per cent of the total cost,” he said.

Johari added that Hindus also need a good temple and something attractive as a sense of pride not only among the Hindus but also the non-Hindus.

“Because with that we can tell the people that this is a Hindus temple and although they are a small community they are here with us.

“Although you are small in number you have contributed a lot to strengthen the unity among Sarawakians,” he said.

He also stressed that it was very important to have a common interest and common platform for the community to work together.

“And that is the beauty and uniqueness of Sarawak’s culture that we can’t find at other places where it is very difficult for us to see clear interactions among the various communities  regardless of their racial and religious backgrounds.

“But in Sarawak, it is very common for us to help each other and that is the beauty we have in our state,” he pointed out.

He added that the state government has a special unit for the non-Muslims where assistance are given to other religions in the state.

“That is the basis of the unit. When you have high religious tolerance, the community will be able to work together for the benefit of the state,” he said.

Also present at the dinner were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
