SIMUNJAN: Residents of Tabuan Iban, Kampung Sekendu, and Taman Hijrah will soon enjoy a safer environment with the implementation of a new RM2.5 million embankment project, which will serve as a key barrier against flood risks in the area.
Stretching 3,541 metres, the project has been approved under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) allocation and will be carried out by the Samarahan Division Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
The works include the construction of two sluice gates, with completion targeted for June 18 next year.
Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris said the embankment is vital not only for flood control but also for sustaining agricultural and economic activities in the area.
“Once completed, the embankment will protect more residents in and around Simunjan. Besides improving safety, it will also ensure the continuity of economic activities, particularly farming,” he said at the project site handover ceremony yesterday (Sept 2).
He also urged residents to give their full cooperation to ensure the project is delivered smoothly and on time, describing it as a reflection of the Sarawak government’s commitment to rural welfare through high-impact initiatives.
At the event, DID Samarahan assistant engineer Nyuak Iba outlined the project scope, which includes the earth embankment, two sluice gates, and ongoing maintenance after completion.
Meanwhile, Kampung Sekendu Baru village chief Taffy Michong, speaking on behalf of residents, thanked the Sarawak government and Awla for making the long-awaited project a reality, saying it would greatly enhance community safety and wellbeing.
