DEBAK: A RM20-million replica of the historic fortress of Rentap at Bukit Sadok is expected to strengthen heritage tourism and preserve the legacy of one of Sarawak’s most prominent resistance leaders.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the project would highlight the historical importance of Bukit Sadok, long associated with Rentap’s struggle against colonial forces, while creating a new attraction for visitors to Betong Division.
“We thank Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving RM20 million to build a replica of Rentap’s fortress at Bukit Sadok, which will become a tourism attraction for this area,” he said during the ‘Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ programme in Debak today.
Uggah said the initiative would help preserve the historical identity of the area while complementing broader development efforts taking place across Betong Division.
He noted that Bukit Sadok remained an important heritage site for the Dayak community and Sarawak as a whole, and the replica fortress would enhance its role as a destination for visitors interested in the state’s history and cultural legacy.
The project is also expected to support local tourism activities alongside ongoing infrastructure improvements and economic initiatives in the division.
Uggah added that heritage-based attractions such as the Bukit Sadok fortress replica could contribute to expanding tourism opportunities while reinforcing Betong’s position as an emerging destination linked to culture, agriculture and regional development initiatives.
