KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has approved the development of waterfronts at Kampung Sejijak and Kampung Paroh, each estimated to cost RM20 million, to boost river-based tourism in the area.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he had, in principle, agreed to the construction of the new waterfronts, following a briefing on the project.
“In Sejijak, the waterfront will cost around RM20 million, and in Paroh, it will also be about RM20 million. I have agreed in principle to implement these projects.
“This would provide better amenities for local residents who often go fishing or participate in boat races,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the closing of the 2025 Sejijak Regatta at Kampung Sejijak jetty here today.
Abang Johari further said the waterfront projects is also part of the development to create cruise tourism in the state.
“The waterfront in Siniawan which we had previously approved has already been completed, and the distance between Siniawan and Kampung Sejijak is about 20 to 30 kilometres.
“You might ask why we are doing this. It is because we are planning a river cruise tourism route from Kuching all the way to Siniawan.
“Tourists can stop here in Sejijak and Paroh to eat, for instance to enjoy local specialties such as ‘tumpik’ (a traditional Melanau dish) and rest before continuing their journey to Siniawan,” he said.
He added that Siniawan, which holds historical significance, is now becoming a popular weekend destination among the locals and tourists.
“The waterfront in Kuching will also be extended to reach the Satok Bridge, forming part of a continuous cruise route.
“This initiative is already in the planning phase, with allocations in place.
“From Kuching Waterfront to Satok Bridge and from there, it’s not far to continue the river cruise all the way to Siniawan,” Abang Johari said.
