TATAU: Each affected shop and lot owner impacted by the recent fire at Pasar Sangan here will receive RM2,000 in immediate cash aid.
Selangau MP Edwin Banta said the assistance aims to ease the financial burden of those who lost their livelihoods in the June 27 incident.
A total of nine wooden shop units were destroyed in the blaze, which severely impacted the trading activities of the local community.
“This is an urgent measure to help victims while waiting for the investigation outcome and long-term recovery plans,” he said during a site visit recently..
The visit also served to extend moral support and encouragement to the affected traders and residents.
Two individuals, aged 26 and 27, sustained burn injuries on their left hands and back in the fire, which started around 12.56 am.
The flames were brought under control by 8.20 am by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
Edwin expressed appreciation for the firefighters’ swift action and commitment in ensuring public safety and minimising further losses.
He also reminded shop owners to prioritise fire safety and improve their fire prevention systems to avoid similar incidents in the future.
“My sympathies to all those affected. I hope you find strength to recover and may everything be eased for you,” he added.
