KUCHING: The government has allocated RM231 million this year to carry out a full pavement overhaul along the long stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway between Durin and Salim, near Kilometer 28 in Sibu Jaya, following public complaints about uneven road surfaces that pose safety risks to motorists.
Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, confirmed the allocation, adding that he had personally visited the site together with Pan Borneo Sarawak and Ministry of Works officers to assess conditions on the ground.
“The inspection was important to enable a direct assessment, particularly on the level of surface unevenness and the need for more thorough follow-up action,” he said.
Nanta said the ministry and its implementing agencies are currently finalising technical assessments and coordination plans before physical works begin, stressing that the approach is meant to ensure the solution properly addresses subsidence and road irregularities at their root.
In the meantime, interim maintenance works will continue periodically to keep the road safe and passable until the full upgrade commences.
He said his team remains committed to accelerating the project and will monitor progress closely, with road user safety and comfort as the top priority.
