SERIAN: The Regional Serian Water Treatment Plant Phase 2 costing RM260 million is expected to be completed by April 2027.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the project, which began construction in October last year, is funded under the Additional Late Applicant Fund (ALAF).
He explained that Phase 2 of the Regional Serian Water Treatment Plant comprises two stages — Stage 1 and Stage 2.
“We hope this project will resolve the water supply issues in the Serian division,” he said in a press conference after inspecting the Slabi Water Treatment Plant today.
He added that RM107 million out of the RM1.1 billion allocation has been designated for pipe rehabilitation and replacement works in the Serian division, to be carried out over the next five years.
“Many of the old and leaking pipes will be replaced, and the replacement process is already underway.”
In addition, he said the government plans to upgrade and replace the pipeline from Siburan to Serian, spanning 34 kilometres, with 900mm diameter pipes.
“This project is expected to be tendered soon, likely in July or August, and it will help form a water grid connecting Kuching to Serian. Phase 3 will follow later.”
Speaking about Phase 3, he said it will cover areas not included in Phase 2 — commonly referred to as “missing links.”
“It will begin once Phase 2 is completed and will also contribute to forming a regional water grid linking Kuching, Serian, and Samarahan,” he said.
As for the Slabi Water Treatment Plant, he said it currently has a capacity of 110 million litres per day (MLD) and is producing 75 MLD. Additionally, the Balai Ringin Water Treatment Plant has a capacity of 2.2 MLD.
“This means the total water treatment capacity in the Serian division stands at 112.2 MLD,” he said.
