BINTULU: About 10.9 kilometres of critical sections along the Bintulu-Bakun Road (FT803) have been identified for proposed repair works estimated at RM29.4 million.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the proposal covers several sections requiring further intervention based on their current condition and level of damage.
“Based on the current assessment, there are about 10.9 kilometres of critical areas proposed for repair works, with an estimated requirement of RM29.4 million.
“This proposal has yet to be approved and involves several sections identified as requiring attention based on the road condition and current level of damage,” he said in a Facebook post.
Nanta inspected the critical sections after visiting several other locations along FT803 where road works had been completed here today (Sept 22).
He said follow-up action was needed, with priority to be determined by conditions on the ground, the severity of damage and the importance of each section to road users.
At the same time, Nanta said heavy vehicle usage remained a challenge along FT803.
He said the Works Ministry had identified overloaded vehicles as among the factors that could accelerate structural pavement damage along the route.
“However, heavy vehicles still need to use this route to sustain economic activities in the area, which also involve local communities.
“That is why our efforts cannot stop at repair works alone.
“We need to repair damaged roads, monitor the condition of sections that have been repaired and, at the same time, address the factors that cause the road to deteriorate more quickly,” he said.
