SERIAN: Two healthcare development projects worth a combined RM3.6 million under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) have been approved, marking a significant enhancement to medical facilities in the Serian area.

The first project involves upgrading the Paediatric Ward at Serian Hospital, with an allocation of RM600,000 to improve comfort levels and enhance the overall quality of care for child patients.

The second project, costing RM3 million, involves the construction of a new Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy (OT/PT) Unit building along with parking facilities at the Serian Health Clinic, a move expected to strengthen rehabilitation services and help address parking constraints at the facility.

Bukit Semuja state assemblyman, John Ilus, said both projects were approved under GKCDA during its Main Steering Committee meeting in October 2025, while the document handover was carried out to facilitate immediate follow-up action and early implementation.

“The Public Works Department (JKR) Serian has been appointed as the technical agency for the projects and will work closely with the technical teams from the hospital and clinic to finalise plans and ensure smooth execution,” he said during the handover of official approval letters to Serian Hospital and Serian Health Clinic today.

On project planning, John explained that the clinic project was prioritised based on current needs, with the initial proposal for a multi-storey parking facility revised to focus instead on the construction of the OT/PT unit, which will still incorporate parking within the project site.

He also expressed hope that the relevant health authorities would issue formal written approvals to avoid administrative complications in the future, stressing that timely coordination is essential to prevent delays.

“Our hope is for both projects to be implemented smoothly and completed as soon as possible, so that improved healthcare services can be delivered to the people of Serian,” he said.
