KUCHING: The construction cost of the Ibu Pertiwi flagpole project here, estimated at around RM30 million, covers not only the flagpole itself but also the development of surrounding facilities and specialised mechanical systems.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the cost included the installation of a mechanical system to raise and lower the Sarawak flag, which weighs an estimated one to two tonnes.

According to him, the scope of the project also involved the construction of Dataran Ibu Pertiwi as well as a walkway linking the site to the Cascading Fountain.

“As such, the estimated RM30-million cost covers not only the construction of the flagpole but also the development of the surrounding area,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the ‘Jualan Gedung Raya Juma’ani’ event in Kuching today.

He added that the construction cost was borne through contributions from private sector energy companies, namely Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) and Shell PLC.

The involvement of these companies, he said, demonstrates a shared commitment in supporting the Sarawak Government’s efforts to strengthen patriotic spirit among the people.

On another matter, Dr Abdul Rahman said Sarawak has been selected to host the Borneo International Halal Showcase (BIHAS) 2026, which is scheduled to take place in July next year in Kuching.

He explained that the exhibition is a continuation of discussions held during the Makkah Halal Forum in February.

According to him, the BIHAS platform will provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs to showcase and promote their products.

He encouraged local entrepreneurs to participate in the exhibition, noting that it is open to various types of local products, provided they have halal certification.

For entrepreneurs whose products have yet to obtain halal certification, he advised them to liaise with the relevant local religious authorities to facilitate the process.

He added that the programme will also involve entrepreneurs from abroad, particularly from Muslim-majority countries, creating wider opportunities for local businesses to introduce their products to international visitors.
