KUCHING: A large-scale pig abattoir is being planned for implementation in Serembu to boost employment in the agricultural sector.

Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh said the project is one of several major developments he has proposed for his constituency, with funding allocated under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

He said RM30 million has been set aside for the abattoir, which is expected to begin either later this year or early next year.
“This project will certainly benefit many people because it can lead to job creation. A project of this scale will require hiring individuals for various roles throughout its lifecycle, including project management, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and marketing,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

He added that the facility will continue to generate employment after its completion.

The new abattoir will be located near the current site in Siniawan, on a seven-acre plot of state land.

According to Miro, the facility will be equipped to support downstream industries such as meatball production and other pork-related products.

He said the upgraded abattoir will be capable of slaughtering about 1,000 pigs per day and will feature modern, high-cost equipment to ensure humane and efficient processing.

“I’ve allocated RM30 million for the project because building an abattoir requires substantial investment in infrastructure and specialised equipment, such as stunning devices, bleeding, and scalding systems.”

Miro is confident that the project will provide long-term job and business opportunities once fully operational.

He said the abattoir will need staff for various roles, including butchers, technicians, maintenance personnel, and cleaning staff.

“In addition, the facility and its employees will drive demand for services such as food and retail, leading to more job opportunities in those sectors.

“These are just some of the long-term benefits of having this kind of project and facility in the area. In essence, a completed project like this acts as an economic engine, creating jobs both directly and indirectly.

“It’s going to benefit people and families not just in Serembu, but also in Bau and Kuching as a whole.”

Recently, Miro also revealed that a RM40 million food hub processing park will be built in Paku, which is also within his constituency.

He said the hub is one of the high-impact economic projects planned under the GKCDA fund. It is expected to offer significant benefits to the local economy, including increased market access for farmers, job creation, and economic diversification.

Each state assemblyman within the GKCDA area has been allocated RM150 million to implement development projects in their constituencies.

There are 10 constituencies under GKCDA: Tanjung Datu, Opar, Tasik Biru, Serembu, Mambong, Tarat, Tebedu, Bukit Semuja, Kedup, and part of Balai Ringin.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has allocated RM1.5 billion to the GKCDA.
