THE Sarawak government has approved RM425 million to upgrade electricity supply infrastructure in Lundu, Lubok Antu, Betong, Sungai Asap and Lawas.

Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki said RM98 million from the total allocation has been set aside for several projects in Lundu.

“The projects include the 33kV monopole lines from the Stenggang 33kV substation to the CENTEX Lundu 33kV substation, which is targeted for completion in the fourth quarter of 2031, and the Kampung Stenggang 33kV substation, scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2030,” he said.

He was replying to Azizul Annuar (GPS-Tanjung Datu) during question time in the DUN today.

Azizul had asked whether further power network reinforcement works were planned for the Lundu-Sematan area to support projected load growth.

Ibrahim said the 33kV system is being developed and implemented based on present and forecasted load over the next five years, while a 132kV system will be introduced at a later stage to meet higher demand.

“Some of the major 33kV projects under implementation include the laying of 33kV cables from Tondong to Kampung Stenggang and from Tondong to Bau Junction. These are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026 at a cost of RM43 million.

“Another project is the installation of 2.5 MegaVAR capacitor banks at the CENTEX 33kV substation and the Lundu 33kV substation, costing RM3.6 million, also targeted for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026,” he added.

Ibrahim added the construction of the double-circuit 33kV cable from Tondong to Bau, costing RM11 million, was energised on Feb 27, 2022.

Meanwhile, the construction of the second 33kV source from Lundu to Sematan, also costing RM11 million, was awarded this month (November) and will start soon.
