SARIKEI: A total of RM43,050 in financial aid was distributed to 861 recipients, alongside land rental payments for participants of an experimental rice planting scheme, during the Majlis Jelajah Ramadan DUN Kuala Rajang at Kampung Rajang here recently.

Seventeen landowners and participants of the scheme at Sungai Bapak, Kampung Rajang, received an initial land rental payment totalling RM28,800.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, revealed that after three planting cycles, nearly RM90,000 has been paid in rental to landowners.

He explained that the Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Kuala Rajang (LAKIKR) serves as an intermediary between the villagers and Padihead Sdn Bhd while coordinating the programme.

It is a collaboration with Ta Ann Group and local landowners to establish the Rajang Delta as a key rice-producing region in Sarawak.

Under the scheme, 17 participants with 25 land lots spanning 135 acres have their land cultivated by Padihead Sdn Bhd in partnership with LAKIKR.

The first phase covers 82.1 acres, 15.7 of which were planted in January 2024, while the experimental rice planting at Sungai Bapak began in October 2023.

The Sarawak Government has allocated RM50 million in subsidies for the Skim Takaful Tanaman Padi (Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme) to safeguard farmers as well as provide income for landowners whose land has been idle for nearly 50 years, to support the state’s food security efforts.

During the event, Len, who is also the Kuala Rajang assemblyman, distributed RM28,950 in aid to 579 recipients, including senior citizens, people with disabilities (OKU), single mothers, asnaf (eligible zakat recipients from underprivileged groups), and orphans.

Later, he visited Masjid Darul Sa’adah in Susur Jambu Indah, Sarikei, for Isyak and Tarawih prayers, where he distributed a further RM14,100 to 282 recipients.
