KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, presented three community development grants totalling RM450,000 to support educational, religious and youth initiatives during a Christmas event organised by SJK Sam Hap Hin.
According to a statement, as part of the Sarawak Government’s commitment to inclusivity and community upliftment, Yap handed over a RM140,000 UNIFOR grant to the school, received by school board chairman, Stephen Kong, to fund parking area upgrades, new furniture and electrical equipment, ICT tools for digital learning, and termite prevention works.
He said investment in strong educational infrastructure remains essential to nurturing future generations, and that UNIFOR grants reflect the state government’s consistent support for mission and vernacular schools.
A second UNIFOR grant of RM300,000 was presented to Sacred Heart Church, Kota Sentosa, for the construction of a new bell tower.
The cheque was received by Father Felix Au and witnessed by Roman Catholic Archbishop Datuk Simon Poh, who acknowledged UNIFOR’s important role in strengthening interfaith harmony across Sarawak.
To support youth development, Yap also presented an RM10,000 Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant to the Boys’ Brigade through Archbishop Poh, recognising the organisation’s contribution to discipline, character building and community service.
Yap said the grants reflect the Sarawak Government’s commitment to ensuring no community is left behind, regardless of race or religion, and thanked Unifor, school and church leaders, teachers, parents and community members for their role in promoting unity and nurturing young Sarawakians.
The event concluded with Christmas performances by students, highlighting the spirit of togetherness that characterises Sarawak’s multicultural society.
