LUNDU: A total of RM500,000 has been allocated to upgrade the football field and drainage system in Kampung Keranji.
Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said the initiative is part of efforts to boost youth engagement in sports and curb social problems in Opar.
He said the initiative also includes plans to improve the SMK Senibong field, which, together with Padang Kampung Keranji, will be used for the upcoming Prima Bidayuh Football Cup in the constituency.
“These efforts aim to provide proper spaces for youths to be active in sports and recreation, reducing their exposure to negative influences,” he said.
He said this during the closing ceremony of the N1 Opar Salako Rara Closed Futsal Tournament at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Biawak on Sunday (Jun 16).
Billy acknowledged the rise in social issues, particularly drug abuse among teens aged 13 to 15, as a serious concern that requires proactive measures.
To further support youth sports development, he also announced several other upcoming projects.
These include the upgrading of the covered futsal court in Kampung Opar, construction of a pickleball court at the Lundu Indoor Stadium, and a beach volleyball court at OSUKA Beach Resort in collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The tournament meanwhile, organised by the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) Lundu branch, saw 13 teams from Salako Rara villages in the constituency competing from Jun 14 to 15.
Volcano FT emerged as champions after defeating Jek United A 3-1 in the final match, taking home RM3,000, medals and a trophy.
The runner-up received RM1,500 while third place earned RM500.
