KUCHING: The Sarawak Melanau Community Welfare Trust Board (LAKKMS) will be constructing a multi-purpose complex named Lebuk Melanau at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here.

Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said the high-impact project, estimated to be worth RM55 million, will be built on more than two acres of land and is expected to be completed within three years.

“We have received strong support from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to realise the development project of Lebuk Melanau,” he said.

Len said this after leading LAKKMS on a courtesy visit to the Premier at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Friday.

He also said that the project development involves the construction of a nine-storey building that will house a multipurpose hall, apartments, workspaces, a canteen, and various other support facilities to cater to the needs of the local community and visiting professionals.

“We see great potential in this area due to its highly strategic location, near Swinburne University and the Borneo Medical Centre.

“It is highly suitable as a temporary accommodation option for foreign lecturers, medical specialists, or anyone coming to serve in Sarawak for either the short or long term,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the project can be completed before the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, thereby enhancing urban facilities and supporting Sarawak’s aspirations to strengthen medical and educational tourism.
