A long-awaited RM59 million rehabilitation project to repair the breached Sungai Seblak embankment in Kabong will be carried out in two phases beginning next year.

Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben said the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is expected to call for tenders for Phase 1 of the Sungai Seblak Corridor Rehabilitation Project at Kampung Sungai Benang, Kabong District, Betong, in the third quarter of 2026.

“The project will be divided into two phases,” he said when responding to Kabong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Chee Kadir durin Q&A session today.

Martin said Phase 1, estimated at RM21 million, will involve the construction of riverbank protection structures using rock revetment spanning approximately 425 metres.

Meanwhile, Phase 2, estimated to cost RM38 million, will involve similar riverbank protection works covering about 535 metres.

“As for Phase 2, DID Sarawak will submit a new project application under the Mid-Term Review of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13),” he added.

Martin also said DID Sarawak has been appointed as the implementing agency for the upgrading and improvement of earthen embankments under the Kabong Nyabor Scheme in Betong Division through funding from the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA).

The project, expected to be tendered in the second quarter of 2026 subject to site approval, aims to prevent saltwater intrusion from Sungai Seblak into nearby agricultural areas while shortening the travel distance from Kabong town to the Sesang area by 6.8km.

On the breached embankment area at Sungai Empayang, Martin said DID Sarawak has taken note of the matter and will conduct a site investigation before carrying out the necessary repair works.
