RM6.7mil for over 1,000 needy students

SERI ISKANDAR: The Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Foundation has allocated RM6.7 million in financial aid to more than 1,000 needy students since it was set up in 2010.

Its vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said during that time, the foundation also allocated full scholarships amounting to RM29 million to 176 students.

He said RM4 million were collected through the UTP Tabung Amanah Zakat UTP and given to 1,342 eligible students, 90 per cent of whom were from the B40 category. Speaking at the university’s 18th convocation ceremony, Mohamed Ibrahim said UTP students had attained success in cultural, arts, sports and community service areas.

“These include the ‘Business Plan Competition And Global Business Champion Sales Star Competition’ in China and getting first place for the  ‘Best Student Chapter Worldwide’ at the Association of Geoscientists and Engineers ( EAGE) Annual Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark,” he said.

At the convocation ceremony yesterday, Petronas chairman Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh was appointed UTP pro-chancellor.

During the one-day ceremony, a total of ​​​​​​​1,659 graduates received their scrolls, comprising 151 doctorate degree holders, 133 masters degree and 1,375 bachelors degrees.
