BELAWAI: A RM60 million breakwater is being built to protect Belawai Beach from coastal erosion and safeguard the coastline for the benefit of local communities.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the 700-metre breakwater at Tanjung Manat forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard coastal areas for the benefit of local communities.
He said the project is crucial in reducing the risk of land loss while protecting the various public facilities that have been developed around Belawai from the effects of coastal erosion.
“If we look at the situation across Belawai, some areas have experienced severe erosion, with parts of the land already claimed by the sea.
“Through the construction of this breakwater, we hope the affected area can be preserved while strengthening protection for the surrounding coastline,” he said when officiating the GP Belawai Series 1/2026 programme held here recently.
Len, who is also Kuala Rajang assemblyman, said coastal protection infrastructure must remain a priority as it is closely linked to the safety of residential areas and the economic activities of the local community.
At the same time, he said that the RM161 million Belawai Waterfront development project is now in the final stage of the design process before implementation.
The two-kilometre development, stretching from the Drainage and Irrigation Department office to Kampung Belawai, will include public amenities and recreational spaces that are expected to enhance the area’s appeal.
He said the project is expected to make Belawai a more attractive destination, creating opportunities for tourism growth and boosting the local economy.
He added that proposed developments, including a golf course and hotel, reflect the government’s long-term plan to establish a tourism ecosystem that will deliver sustained benefits to the local community.
According to him, the integration of environmental protection, infrastructure development and tourism expansion will serve as a catalyst for Belawai’s future growth and development.
