SEPANG: Narcotics police have arrested two local men for attempting to smuggle 18.97kg of suspected methamphetamine into Sarawak last week.

KLIA police chief ACP Azman Shari’at said the suspects, aged 19 and 20, were taken into custody in separate arrests at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 departure halls on Feb 7 and 8.

The drugs, valued around RM607,200, were sealed in 18 plastic packages labelled ‘Guanyingwang’.

He noted that the drugs were intended for the Sarawak market and could cater to 94,875 users.

“The modus operandi involved concealing the drug packages in food boxes mixed with other snack packages to evade detection. They also used self-check-in services, which can be harder for authorities to detect,” he said in a statement.

Azman said that the first suspect was arrested at 6.30 pm on Feb 7. He later led police to a hotel room here, where officers found a box containing eight plastic packages of methamphetamine.

Meanwhile, the second suspect was arrested on Feb 8, leading to the seizure of a box containing 10 similar drug packages.

Urine tests showed the first suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, while the second tested negative.

Both suspects, who have no prior criminal or drug-related records, have been remanded for seven days until tomorrow (Feb 14) to facilitate investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
