SARIKEI: Three deteriorating wooden bridges in rural Sarikei will soon be replaced with new steel structures, following federal government approval for reconstruction works worth RM663,350.

The projects, implemented under Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA), have completed the tender process and been handed over to contractors. Construction is expected to be completed within three months.

The approved projects cover bridge upgrades at Jalan Mee Ming in Minah, Sungai Kar along Jalan Kesa, and the Kesa-Baron area.

Each site will also see concrete surfacing works to improve road access and ensure long-term durability.

Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok state assemblyman, said the upgrades were urgently needed as the wooden bridges had become unsafe for daily use.

“These wooden bridges have been deteriorating for years, and the safety of rural residents is always my priority. I raised this matter to the federal government without delay, and I am grateful that the approval was granted,” he added.

Recently, Huang was represented by Kapitan Ling Dien Yong during a site visit with officers from the relevant agencies to assess ground conditions and obtain updates on the work progress.

Huang reaffirmed his commitment to improving rural infrastructure, stressing that safe and reliable access routes are essential for the well-being of the people.

“Upgrading basic infrastructure is not just about development, it is about protecting lives and ensuring our rural communities enjoy the same level of safety and comfort as those in urban areas,” he stressed.
