MIRI: A long-awaited RM70 million upgrade of the Pujut GK roundabout and its surrounding road network has now moved a step closer to construction with the completion of key preliminary works.
Deputy Minister of Tourism , Arts and Culture, Chiew Choon Man said he received the latest progress update from Works Minister Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi during the recent Parliament sitting.
The project involves converting the Pujut GK roundabout, also known as Bulatan Pujut 3, into a signalised intersection, while widening Jalan Bulatan Pujut-Sungai Lutong from two lanes to three lanes.
The road upgrade will stretch from Bulatan Saberkas Pujut to the Pujut 7 junction.
According to Chiew, all preliminary studies required before the project could proceed have now been completed. These include the site investigation, Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) and land survey.
He said the Ministry of Works has also completed its Value Assessment for the project and confirmed an allocation of RM70 million under Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (13MP).
With the preliminary phase completed and funding secured, the project will now proceed to the design, procurement and tendering stages before construction can begin.
Chiew expressed hope that these processes would be completed without delay to enable physical works to commence as soon as possible.
He acknowledged that residents here had waited many years for the project, describing it as a critical infrastructure upgrade to ease chronic traffic congestion along one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
He said the roundabout upgrade has remained one of his key priorities since he was elected as Miri Member of Parliament in 2022.
He noted that, alongside other major federal projects such as the upgrading of Miri Airport, the Sungai Tujoh ICQS complex, delayed school developments and coastal protection works at Lutong Beach, the road project was among the issues he had consistently raised in Parliament.
“I will continue to pursue regular updates and ensure accountability at every stage so that this project, and other approved federal government projects in Miri, can be implemented and completed without unnecessary delay for the benefit of the people,” he said.
