MIRI: A total of RM85,000 has been allocated to curb severe coastal erosion threatening Kampung Nelayan Luak beach here, with works set to begin immediately.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said the temporary project that is expected to be completed before the end of the year involves placing rocks along the affected stretch to prevent further damage caused by waves.
“Today’s visit aims to assess the condition of the beach, which has been eroded by nearly 40 metres.
“I am pleased that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Miri Division has confirmed the RM85,000 allocation to install rock barriers as a short-term solution,” he said during a site visit recently.
The Piasau assemblyman added that an additional RM300,000 will be channelled under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) 2026 to upgrade the fishermen’s boat storage area at the same location.
Ting said the initiative underscores the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment towards strengthening coastal infrastructure and safeguarding the welfare of local fishing communities.
