RM8,600 worth of syabu seized in two raids, woman among three arrested

KUCHING: Three individuals, including a woman, were arrested in two separate drug operations conducted by the state Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) this week, involving suspected syabu worth over RM8,000.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the first arrest took place around 9.45 pm on Apr 23, when a 20-year-old local man was picked up by NCID personnel at the roadside of Kampung Muara Tebas.

He added that 33.45 grams of suspected syabu, estimated to be worth RM3,300, were seized.

“The suspect tested negative for drugs and has no prior drug-related record.

“He is currently remanded for five days until Apr 29 to assist with investigations under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“The section provides for life imprisonment or a minimum five-year jail term and not less than 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction,” he said.

In a separate case, Alexson said a 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested around 12.50 am on Apr 24 at the parking area of Timberland Park.

The NCID team seized 52.75 grams of suspected syabu valued at RM5,300.

“Both suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. The male suspect has 10 previous drug-related records, while the female suspect has 11,” he added.

Alexson said they are remanded for six days until Apr 30 for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes.

The police chief then urged the public to continue cooperating with the authorities by channelling any information on drug-related activities to the nearest police station.
