KUCHING: Several road closures and diversions will take place in the city this month in conjunction with the Governor’s 79th official birthday celebration.
Kuching Police chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the ceremonial parade and grand assembly will be held on October 11 at Padang Merdeka, from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon.
To facilitate preparations and ensure smooth traffic flow, a series of temporary closures will be implemented.
“From October 2 until October 12, Jalan McDougall will be closed to allow for the setting up and dismantling of tents and other preparations.
“Between October 6 and 8, from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, several roads will be affected for the parade rehearsals.
“These include Jalan McDougall, the traffic light junction near RTM leading to Padang Merdeka, Jalan Wawasan, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg (Carpenter Street),” he said.
He pointed out that a full rehearsal will take place on October 9 from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, during which more roads will be closed.
They are RTM traffic light junction at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg; Jalan McDougall towards Padang Merdeka; Jalan Wawasan from Jalan Wayang; Jalan Main Bazaar to Lebuh Temple; Lebuh Temple to Lebuh Wayang (near Wisma Pelita); Lebuh Wayang to Jalan Main Bazaar; and Jalan Gambier to Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
On the day of the celebration itself, October 11, road closures will again be enforced from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon for the parade and grand assembly.
Later that evening, from 7:00 pm to midnight, further closures will be in place for the ‘Konsert Rakyat’ event.
In light of this, Alexson urged motorists to avoid parking along the affected roads, plan their journeys in advance, and use alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion.
