KUCHING: Road users and motorists are urged to follow rules and regulations to ensure road safety.
Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak stressed the importance of following the key guidelines to ensure safe and smooth travel during the festive season.
“Drivers and passengers are advised to be courteous on the road and adjust their speed according to road conditions.
“For example, reduce the vehicle’s speed when entering congested areas, approaching intersections, navigating bends or any hindrance that may restrict the driver’s sight so that they can be prepared to stop the vehicle during emergency without losing control.”
He also advised road users to exercise caution and be vigilant with other road users, to anticipate their actions and avoid the probability of accidents.
He also reminded road users to plan their journey ahead and postpone if they are feeling tired, drowsy, under the influence of alcohol or in an uncertain condition.
“If long distance driving is unavoidable, make sure to have a second driver to prevent accidents led by lack of concentration due to being tired.
“Road users also need to comply to the speed limit while driving on the road, and do not exceed the speed limit despite the difference in speed limit between federal and state roads, which are 100km/h and 90km/h respectively.”
He also stated that drivers and motorists need to give signal and adhere to safety regulations while changing lanes, by checking the side and rearview mirrors and avoid driving slowly at the right lane.
“Always obey traffic regulations at intersections and stop when the traffic light turns red or yellow to give priority to pedestrians.
“Avoid from tailing vehicles too near as this often leads to serious accidents, hence maintain a safe space to brake to avoid crashing into other vehicles or objects.”
Road users are reminded to follow the guidelines while overtaking, such as avoid overtaking while being unsure or cutting the queue as it can endanger the lives of other road users apart from being rude.
“Avoid cutting in between vehicles as it may endanger yourself and the others.
“For the motorcyclists, always remember to wear helmet despite the distance of your journey as it may save your life.”
DCP Saifullizan stated that it is crucial for everyone to practise caution and assume that risks are everywhere on the road, no matter the time.
“Everyone wants to reach their destination safely, while being comfortable on the road, so please be mindful to other road users.”
