KUCHING: Small businesses and traders intending to sell food and beverages outside their homes or by the roadside must adhere to guidelines from the Ministry of Health and traffic laws.
Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi addressed concerns raised by small businesses and traders regarding the possibility of organising a smaller version of a Ramadhan bazaar.
He stated that discussions have been held on the matter, with an emphasis on compliance with guidelines set by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).
“Traders and small businesses must comply with the guidelines set by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).
“We would not stop them (traders and small businesses) but we urge the residents of Kuching to arrange their stalls in an orderly manner,” he told reporters after attending the Chinese New Year edition Car-Free Morning Programme organised by DBKU today (Feb 18).
He also noted the importance of cleanliness of the businesses and traders, stressing that food buyers and their premises to be in good, clean and tidy condition at all times.
Furthermore, Abdul Rahman reminded food sellers not to litter rubbish in public places and cautioned against causing traffic congestion.
“I would also like to remind food sellers to ensure their food stalls do not cause traffic congestion and I urge road users to avoid parking by the roadsides if they wish to buy their food which could disrupt traffic flow,” he said.
He pointed out that food sellers must be vaccinated against typhoid in addition to adhering to Ministry of Health guidelines.
Apart from that, Abdul Rahman announced that DBKU has identified three locations for this year’s Ramadan Bazaar.
“For this year’s Ramadan Bazaar, just like previous years, the locations for this year are Semarak, Sukma Ria and Satok,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Abdul Rahman, accompanied by DBKU Mayor Hilmy Othman, participated in the Car Free Morning Programme, joining members of the public and lion dancers in a fun walk to celebrate the Chinese New Year festive period.
The Car Free Morning Programme, initiated in 2021 in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), aims to promote a low-carbon city and campus.
