MALACCA: Over 70 successful surgeries have been carried out using Malaysia’s first robotic-assisted surgical system, Hinotori, at Mahkota Medical Centre since its introduction earlier this year.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, who officiated at the launch of the system on Tuesday (Sept 23), said the achievement highlighted the success of Japanese technology in enhancing patient care.

“According to the information I received, more than 70 surgeries have already been performed successfully.

“Of these, 37 were neurology procedures while the rest were mainly prostate-related cases,” he said during the press conference.

Ab Rauf said the use of advanced surgical technology would not only increase patients’ confidence in seeking treatment locally but also help strengthen Malacca’s health tourism industry.

“With this new technology, the level of trust among patients and users has improved, and we hope this will contribute further to health tourism.

“We are confident that health tourism will remain a key pillar of Malacca’s economy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mahkota Medical Centre chief executive officer Teo Chin Yee said the hospital started using the Hinotori system at the end of January this year.

“The first case we performed was a gynaecology procedure, and it was also the first such procedure done outside Japan,” she said.

She further added that the technology adoption highlighted Mahkota’s commitment to advancing healthcare services.

“As of today, we have successfully completed 70 cases.

“About 60 per cent of these involved obstetrics and gynaecology, while 40 per cent were urology cases, including prostate cancer procedures,” she said.
