KUCHING: KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital has performed a total of 600 knee replacement surgeries using the latest robotic technology.

Of these, 500 surgeries utilised the Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA), while 100 were performed using the Robotic-Assisted Solution (VELYS).

ROSA,  a revolutionary knee surgery system, was introduced in  Sept 2023 while VELYS, which enables enhanced orthopaedic care was introduced in October this year.

Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Lee Woo Guan said the success of ROSA and VELYS amounts to more than just a technical achievement as it is a reflection of unwavering dedication to advancing patient care through precision technology.

“As the first healthcare institution in Borneo Island to adopt this robotic technology, this achievement showcases our dedication to providing the latest medical treatments to patients in line with our ‘Care for Life’ philosophy.

“This technology has set a new benchmark in orthopaedic surgery, offering unmatched precision, improving surgical outcomes, and providing patients with faster and smoother recovery,” he said during ROSA and VELYS Appreciation Dinner at English Tea House on Saturday (Dec 7).

Dr Lee added that these systems have set a new benchmark in orthopaedic surgery, offering unparalleled accuracy, improving surgical outcomes, and providing patients with faster and smoother recoveries.

“Many of our patients have shared their stories of remarkable transformations, quicker recovery times, reduced pain, and an enhanced quality of life after surgery.

“It is deeply fulfilling to witness how these technologies are not only changing lives but also instilling hope for a healthier and more active future,” he said.

Nor Azlina speaking.

Meanwhile, KPJ Kuching general manager, Nor Azlina Jemain emphasised the broader impact of these technological advancements.

“With advanced technology and exceptional medical expertise, we are ready to offer world-class services that cater to both local and international patients’ needs,” she said briefly.

Both systems have transformed surgical outcomes, providing safer, more accurate, and effective treatments to improve healthcare standards across Sarawak.

The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution is designed to enhance surgical precision by integrating CT-free technology to optimise implant placement and this system equips surgeons with the information needed to preserve the soft tissue envelope, predict joint stability, and work towards returning knee function.

And ROSA is a surgical robot developed by Zimmer Biomet that uses advanced 3D technology to plan, measure, and ensure precise bone resection and alignment, while continuously monitoring bone and tissue tension during knee surgery to improve accuracy, speed, and efficiency.
