BUDAPEST: Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas had the narrowest of escapes as she claimed a fourth straight women’s triple jump title in dramatic fashion, the German news agency (dpa) said.
Rojas, whose last global defeat dates back to the 2016 Olympics, barely made it into the eight-woman finale after the first three jumps in last place on countback over American Keturah Orji.
Both had 14.33 metres (m), but Rojas had a second-best of 14.26m while Orji had no other measurement.
It then took a sixth and final attempt from the world record holder to get gold after all with 15.08m.
Long-time leader and European champion Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk had to settle for silver after a first attempt of 15.00m. The bronze went to Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez. – BERNAMA-dpa
