SIBU: In an increasingly challenging global landscape with increasing natural disasters, health emergencies and various social issues, the role of humanitarian organisations such as the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRCS) is now seen as increasingly critical in ensuring that the wellbeing of the community continues to be maintained.

Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, stressed that the existence of the MRCS is not only relevant, but also a major necessity, especially in emergency situations that demand quick, organised and effective action.

“In today’s uncertain world, the MRCS plays an important role in ensuring that aid can be channelled quickly and efficiently to those in need,” he said at the 2026 MRCS Sibu Branch Annual Inspection Parade which took place at Stadium Tun Zaidi here today (May 2).

According to Chieng, the intensive training received by the MRCS members, which includes first aid skills, emergency management and community service, has equipped them with the essential capabilities to act in critical situations.

He said continuous training not only increases the level of efficiency, but also builds the self-confidence of the members in facing various emergency challenges.

Meanwhile, he also expressed confidence in the role of young people in strengthening the organisation, describing the active involvement of youth as a positive development towards building a more resilient society.

Youth participation, he explained, in the MRCS not only meets co-curricular needs but also forms discipline, empathy values and a high spirit of volunteerism.

Chieng also stressed his commitment to continue supporting various initiatives that emphasise youth development, strengthening the spirit of volunteerism and increasing community resilience.

“We will continue to strengthen support for programmes that bring great benefits to society, especially in producing a caring and competitive young generation,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to the teachers, advisors and volunteers who are the mainstays in guiding and shaping the personalities of MRCS members.

“Their contributions are immense and deserve to be appreciated for being the backbone of the success of this organisation,” he said.

The parade saw the participation of MRCS members from various primary and secondary local schools who displayed a high level of discipline and a strong spirit of cooperation throughout the event.

Also present were MRCS Sibu Branch’S Chairman, Chua Huong Kee, along with the committee members.
